WHY AND HOW TO SHARPEN YOUR SKIS? FOLLOW THE GUIDE…

Whatever your level, it is important to maintain your ski edges very regularly. Whether in competition or recreational skiing, well-sharpened edges will allow you to get the best performance from your equipment. Here are the sharpening tips from WORDEN specialists.

HOW TO SHARPEN YOUR SKIS?

  • FLATTENING THE BASE

It is very important to check that the base is perfectly flat using a straight edge.

In order to glide properly, the base must protrude slightly in relation to the edges.
There are three possible cases: convex base – concave base – flat base.

  1. Flatten the base by scraping with a metal scraper
  2. Brush with a bronze brush.
  3. Then bevel the base edges.

  • REMOVING THE SIDEWALL MATERIAL

Before sharpening, the ABS sidewall must be removed. This is the plastic or metal strip that reinforces the edge.

It prevents proper edge sharpening and clogs the file. To do this, use a tool such as an Ergorazor. Since the sidewalls are in contact with the snow while skiing, they need to be as smooth as possible. It is therefore not necessary to press too hard to achieve a clean cut from top to bottom. Finish by polishing the sidewalls with polish.

  • SHARPENING THE SIDE EDGES

To sharpen the side edges, the type of file used will depend on the condition of your edges and your level of skiing.

How to choose the side edge angle:

  • Always check the direction of use of the file (follow the arrow).

  • There is no mandatory sharpening direction
    (usually from tip to tail).

  • Sharpen along the entire length of the edge for uniform wear.

  • There is no need to press very hard on the file.

  • Using rubber stones is recommended to remove the burr
or to detune the tip and tail.

We recommend using a square guide for maximum precision, or a sharpening tool for easier use.

  • POLISHING THE SKI EDGES

Use a diamond plate to polish the edges and/or a stone to polish or harden the edges.

For best effectiveness, diamond plates or stones should be used after soaking them in a glass of water.
